Steve Zorn
Trainer
Steve Zorn has been involved with dog training for more than 20 years. Steve has always had a passion for animals from a very early age. He sensed a special bond with animals from childhood with the family dog, friends'' dogs and cats, and the many other animals he encountered on family and friends'' farms. His lifelong thirst for knowledge pertaining to animals and animal behavior is insatiable.
Since his early 30's Steve has been involved in rescue work, where he co-founded and ran an animal rescue for 16 years. In this time Steve rescued, rehabbed, trained, and found permanent homes for well over 1000 dogs. Many of these were rare breeds, or, breeds deemed dangerous. He quickly became the go to guy for many abused, neglected, and homeless dogs that ended up in shelters and county pounds in the Midwest. Steve's passion has always been with the animals that were ignored or deemed too difficult to bother with. He counts these as his greatest successes. Steve has also been a mentor to other animal rescue organizations offering advice on training, behavior, and, management of dogs and cats.
The breed Steve is most passionate about is the German Shepherd Dog. He has owned, trained, and competed with German Shepherds for 25 years in local, regional, and, national events in several very demanding competitive dog sports. Steve is a previous member of Topline German Shepherd Dog Club, a founder of, and the original President of Turner Junction Working Dog Club, as well as Vice President and co-founder of Yorkville Schutzhund Club. Steve has also trained several German Shepherd Dogs prior to them being accepted at police K-9 academies where they then became full-fledged police K-9's.
Steve also ran his own dog training business in the Chicagoland area, and, then again in Nashville, TN and Phoenix, AZ. While in Nashville Steve also worked with one of the inventors of the very difficult Vapor Wake Training Method for Explosives Detection Dogs.
Presently, Steve still enjoys training and competing with his German Shepherds and has more recently dabbled a little with dock diving. His passion also remains with rare breeds of dogs, as well as Livestock Guard Dogs utilized on farms.
Steve's best advice to all dog owners is to build a strong bond with your dogs based on mutual trust, and, learn how to understand what your dog is thinking, especially in difficult or stressful situations.
See What Other Dog Owners are Saying
In the first week back it kept one of them safe from a loose, aggressive dog. Without the training, my boys would have reacted to the dog and it would have been a scary development.
I would recommend this to anyone who wants their dogs to live a full, fun life!!
I originally chose The Dog Wizard because the previous trainer and I had an instant rapport. Ari was to be my husbands service dog but sadly he passed away soon after we moved here. Ari and I were both grieving when we started training so the gentle training style was what I needed...but I will admit it did not really give me enough tools to move forward with Ari.
Heather became my trainer after the holidays and I have to say I was not sure we were going to find that same bond. Heather basically started me back from the beginning and got us on track.
While there are things that Ari still can not perform I am happy to say that The Dog Wizard is stepping up and honoring the spirit of the contract and is going to address the deficiencies in e-collar training. This willingness to honor that is why I am amending my review.
While I have only spoke about the things that didn't happen I forgot to talk about the things that did happen. Ari can go into a store like Home Depot/Lowes and be the perfect companion. When I stop to look at something she sits and waits. When I am pushing a cart or just strolling through the aisles she is right in my hip pocket. She will wait until I give her a release command (most of the time) before she goes to get pets.
Ari can go on a walk in the park or around the neighborhood without pulling my arm out of its socket when she sees another dog or a squirrel. While she does still try to herd me (she is an Aussie) I have the tools to correct her and reward her for good behavior.
I am hopeful that my e-collar training session will help me with Ari learning that the cats do not want to be chased through the house and herded into one room and that it will also assist in her recall so we can play fetch in the park without her running off.
Thank you Heather for offering to reschedule lessons when I was not in a good head space, for offering training on your days off, and even for telling me that I needed to step up.
I will keep you up to date after my e-collar session to let you know how it goes with the cats!
About The Dog Wizard Oklahoma City
Our dog training goes beyond basic commands like Sit, Come, and Down. Our approach focuses on helping your dog make better choices and respond to you instead of their impulses.
We cover all the essential obedience commands you need to communicate effectively with your dog. But more importantly, we teach your dog to stay engaged and follow through with these commands, even in the most distracting environments.
Our goal is to enhance your dog’s understanding of obedience, making it a natural part of their behavior, not just a few tricks they perform when they feel like it.
