Bringing home a new puppy is a fun time for a family, but it’s one that comes with great responsibilities. One of those responsibilities is making sure the puppy is well trained. Training a new puppy is usually a bit easier when you have assistance. The Dog Wizard Sarasota is here to help pet parents in the area ensure their puppies are properly trained.

At The Dog Wizard, we understand that every puppy is unique. We’ve tailored our training method to encompass a variety of philosophies about training so we can meet every puppy’s needs. While our primary focus is on positive reinforcement, we also utilize preventive and corrective methods to teach puppies the skills they need to thrive in life.

Why Is Obedience Training Important for Puppies?

Obedience training is important for puppies because it helps to keep them safe. A puppy that can follow at least basic commands can be kept out of some troublesome situations. It’s important that the puppy knows how to obey commands even when there are distractions around. This is something that’s useful when you’re away from home with the pup. They’ll know what to do when you have them at the dog park or a pet store.

Making sure your puppy knows at least the basic obedience commands can also keep other pets and humans who are around the puppy safe. It’s imperative that every puppy, especially those that will grow into larger dogs, know simple things like not jumping up on people.

Puppies also need to know how to come and sit. They need to know how to remain in place. They also need to know how to walk on a loose leash so you don’t always have to keep it tight. This gives them a little more freedom to explore when they’re out walking with you.

Another reason obedience training is important is that it fosters trust between you and your puppy. Your puppy needs to know that you’re going to care for it, but you have to do this while establishing that you’re the alpha in the home. In the wild, the alpha dog is the one that’s in charge of the pack.

What Puppy Training Classes Does The Dog Wizard Offer?

The Dog Wizard Sarasota knows that one form of training isn’t going to be effective with every dog. Because of this, we offer a variety of programs that can help your puppy learn the commands you need it to know. We also provide you with options that can help to reinforce the skills the puppy learns and refresh its obedience.

Basic Puppy Classes

If you can make the commitment to attend regular group classes, The Dog Wizard’s puppy class might be an ideal start for you. These classes are beneficial for puppies that are at least 8 weeks old up to 5 months. They’ll learn how to follow basic commands while on a leash.

We welcome our puppy students to as many classes as they can attend until they’re 6 months old. These group classes help dogs with basic obedience training as well as socialization since they’re taking the class with other puppies.

Puppy Jumpstart Classes

Puppy Jumpstart classes are ideal for pet parents who can’t commit to coming to puppy classes on a regular basis. In this program, we keep your puppy for 7, 14 or 21 days for intensive training. These classes are best for puppies that are 10 weeks to 6 months old.

This training program includes your puppy’s boarding with us, a leash, a treat pouch and information for you so you can keep up with the dog’s training once your puppy goes back home to you. These classes go far beyond basic commands. We also socialize the puppy, work on housebreaking and help the puppy build confidence.

Private Obedience Lessons

The Dog Wizard Sarasota also offers private lessons. These are an important component of a training program because it gives our trainers a chance to see your puppy in its own element. We can observe the puppy and help you to find solutions for the issues you’re having with the problem behaviors.

Not all private lessons have to happen in your home. If you know what skills you want us to work on, we can offer private lessons at our facility. This is a good chance for us to work on reinforcing the skills your puppy learned in puppy class.
