Find Out How We Can Help

When Should a Dog Start Obedience Training?

Ideally, your dog will start basic obedience training as a puppy. We understand this isn’t always possible. Some dogs are adopted as adults, so we work with any dog owner to address the obedience needs of their pet. This helps to encourage a better relationship between you and your dog.

The need for a dog to understand basic obedience commands can’t be understated. The commands it learns during dog training can help to keep your dog and others around it safe. The dog trainer will start by helping your dog learn basic commands, such as sit, stay, and come. A dog that’s able to comply with these commands despite distractions can often be kept out of trouble.

What Behavior Problems Can Dog Training Address?

Most dog owners want a companion that’s well-behaved. This means they need to halt problematic behaviors as quickly as possible. The Dog Wizard Sarasota helps you do just this. We work with dog owners to stop troublesome behavior, including:

  • Improper chewing
  • Aggression and food aggression
  • Separation anxiety
  • Lack of socialization
  • Hyperactivity
  • Inappropriate jumping
  • Nervousness
  • Lack of confidence

These problems aren’t going to go away on their own. Our dog trainers work with owners to determine the underlying cause of the behavior. This enables us to suggest suitable preventive and corrective activities. It also helps give you options so you can find what works best for your dog in certain circumstances.

Why Turn to Us for Dog Obedience Training in Sarasota, Florida?

Our dog trainers are taught to emphasize mutual respect between dogs and their owners. While some dog training programs focus only on teaching the dogs commands, The Dog Wizard Sarasota wants owners to understand their dogs. This mutual understanding helps to shore up the training since owners can work to understand why the dog is doing certain things, which may help them take proactive steps to prevent these unwanted behaviors.

We’re aware that dogs don’t all learn in the same way. Because of this, The Dog Wizard Sarasota offers a variety of class types so you can find the option that works best for your dog. For most people, a combination of lesson styles is the preferred method. Your dog can benefit from group classes since these can teach it obedience despite having distractions around. Individual private lessons are also beneficial since they reinforce the lessons from the group classes in a more targeted manner.

The Dog Wizard Sarasota also offers a boarded training option for dogs that need intensive training. It’s best to pair this option with other lesson types so your dog becomes accustomed to taking commands from you, the owner, instead of just the dog trainer who works with it during the intensive phase of the program.

The Dog Wizard Sarasota knows that dogs and owners alike can benefit from life lessons. When you enroll your dog in our obedience training programs, you become part of our family. After your dog graduates from the training program, you’re welcome to stop in for refresher classes during our support group classes. We look forward to seeing familiar faces in each class.

What Philosophy Is the Backbone of The Dog Wizard Sarasota?

Almost everywhere you turn, you can find conflicting advice on the best way to train a dog. The Dog Wizard Sarasota’s philosophy is that you have to use balanced training if you want to have a well-behaved dog. The backbone of our training is helping dog owners to learn what works for their dog because there isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution to training that will work for every dog.

Our dog obedience program focuses largely on teaching a dog how to be confident in itself and its owner. The communication between dog and owner goes far beyond the command and action that’s often thought of when people are discussing dog training.

We understand that a well-rounded dog is one that understands what’s expected of it and that has the confidence that its owner will care for it. Many dogs need to be challenged, so our dog training methods also include enrichment activities that help the dogs to learn how to use their instincts properly. Not only does this make the dog happy, but it also gives it another outlet for its energy and a source of confidence.

Robin was terrific and a great trainer for our dog (and us)! Our dog loved the sessions and progressed at a good pace each week. She encouraged us to reach out at any time between lessons (and even now that we’ve finished the program) with any questions or to just share pics or videos on how our pup was doing. All the staff we met were very professional and great with our dog. Would totally recommend The Dog Wizard trainers to anyone (and Robin for sure if you can get her!) . We look forward to taking our pup on walks and hikes with more fun and freedom for us all.

We were impressed with the quality with Robin’s work, professionalism, candor and ultimately the results. We enrolled our pup (she’s three year old) in a two week board and train program to sharpen her basic obedience, leash train, and to try to break her of a few bad habits. Robin took great care of our girl, communicated regularly with updates and progress notes and trained us to speak our pup’s new language when she returned home. Robin was able to exceed expectations and get further in her training than anticipated. We feel like all of the foundation was laid really well and now it’s up to us to stay the course. I can confidently and unequivocally recommend Robin and The Dog Wizard.

The Dog Wizard changed my life and saved my relationship with my dog! Mackie (my dog) had a decent amount of training when he was a puppy, but had poor leash obedience and manners when company came over. Robin did a thorough assessment of our situation and devised a plan to help these problems incrementally. She always made sure I understood the “why” component behind training. Her attention to detail, treatment of my beloved dog, and general kindness blew me away each session. I am happy to say Mackie is confidant, happy, and has found his purpose in life. I would recommend Robin as a trainer to anyone.
