Steve and Dom at The Dog Wizard of Richmond are truly exceptional — They are both so knowledgeable, passionate, and incredibly talented at what they do. From the very first consultation with Steve, which was refreshingly honest and transparent about what to expect, to completing our first day training package for our golden retriever puppy, the entire experience surpassed our expectations.

What sets them apart is how comprehensive and personalized the program is. They didn’t just train our puppy — they trained our whole family, including our young kids, who had an absolute blast! They also provided an abundance of valuable resources including videos, written instructions, and tips tailored to our specific challenges, which have made all the difference in continuing our progress at home. Our puppy Moose made huge strides, and it’s clear that Steve and Dom genuinely care deeply about the dogs they work with. We’re so grateful for the experience and couldn’t recommend them more highly!

Steve and Dom are amazing. We brought them our 10 month old pit mix who while super lovable had zero manners and was out of control. At almost 60 pounds we had to be able to get him under control. Within 6 weeks their team had him walking in a heel, waiting at the door (no longer blasting through the door to get outside), coming when called, among other things. The best part was he came out a happier, calmer dog and is now able to show us what an amazing dog he is. Their training program set our dog up for a lifetime of success and happiness.

Steve and Dom are the best trainers we’ve ever worked with. They are so caring, patient, and genuinely invested in the dogs they work with. Moose absolutely loves them (and he doesn’t love everyone…he’s a bit aloof), which says everything. They truly whipped him into shape and helped turn him into the best boy with amazing manners. They also gave us the best tools and guidance to continue his success at home. 1000/10 recommend!

The absolute best trainers! Steve & Dominique turned our disrespectful, rude corgi into a dog we actually want to hang out with. And made our other corgi into less of of a wild child! Their training methods are fantastic. They are communicative, offer great feedback and ideas, and offer support long beyond the training sessions (for the life of your puppo!). The group walks/training sessions are super fun too! You put in the work, and you’ll have a wonderful relationship with your dog.

Our Airedale Terrier had graduated from a positive reinforcement training and a agility program, but some laziness on our side and his energetic and curious nature had us wondering what to do to get him to stop thinking of every command as a suggestion. Dog Wizard Steve was spotted at Perks local coffee shop minding several well-behaved dogs, which led to an introduction to the Dog Wizard approach for our four-year-old. The training has been intensive (try getting a “free-range” Airedale to heel), but successful, including a coffer shop trip and other adventures in the big world. His behavior has been much better with visitors (less tendency to jump up) and with other dogs (something he gets a dose of in every training day at Dog Wizard). He’s become a much more reliable walking partner and now follows all the basics pretty consistently. Kudos to Dominique, Steve and the program developers. This seems to be a great way to shape a willful pup into a great companion who still carries his Airedale ‘tude.

Steve and Dom are the best. From early puppy confidence training to later leash walking and impulse control, they helped us build Ryder’s confidence and our abilities to help her be her best doggie self. We appreciate the time they give to answering questions and providing ongoing support through group walks.

We had such a wonderful experience with The Dog Wizard Richmond! We brought our 9-year-old pug in for help with walking reactivity and some basic obedience refreshers. We were about to bring home a new puppy and wanted to be sure we worked on a few of his habits ahead of time, so the puppy wouldn’t pick up any bad behaviors.

From the very beginning, Steve was incredible to work with. Before we even committed to training, he spent 90 minutes on the phone with me — answering all my questions, easing my nerves about bringing a new puppy into our home, and even offering helpful tips and advice completely pro bono. That kind of care and thoughtfulness is so rare, and it meant a lot to us.

Once we started training, the entire team was fantastic. They really took the time to get to know our pug’s unique personality and quirks, and tailored the sessions to fit his needs and ours. His walking reactivity improved dramatically — walks are now calm, controlled, and so much more enjoyable. We also worked on "place" commands, which have been a lifesaver at home, especially when we have guests or need a little downtime.

You can tell the trainers genuinely care about the dogs (and people) they work with. They gave us practical tools, clear guidance, and the confidence to keep reinforcing good behaviors on our own. I’d highly recommend The Dog Wizard Richmond to anyone — whether you’re dealing with a reactive dog, prepping for life with a new puppy, or just looking to build a better relationship with your pet. We’re so grateful we found them!

Steve and Dom worked magic on my very stubborn 85 pound goofball. We did the 7 week training. Hank went from being dropped off in a muzzle, pulling me down the road and reactive to every dog and person he saw to enjoyable walks around the neighborhood without reacting! The quality of life and adventures we have gained are just amazing.

Richmond Dog Wizard, making your life easier and your dogs life better. Giving dogs freedom by implementing obedience and resolving all types of behavioral problems so that they can be a better part of your family.

About The Dog Wizard Richmond

Our dog training goes beyond basic commands like Sit, Come, and Down. Our approach focuses on helping your dog make better choices and respond to you instead of their impulses.

We cover all the essential obedience commands you need to communicate effectively with your dog. But more importantly, we teach your dog to stay engaged and follow through with these commands, even in the most distracting environments.

Our goal is to enhance your dog’s understanding of obedience, making it a natural part of their behavior, not just a few tricks they perform when they feel like it.

The Dog Wizard Richmond offers a free evaluation. This enables our trainers to talk with you, in depth, learn about your dog, go over your training goals, and find a program that works for you. Give us a call and we will help you set one up.
The Dog Wizard trainers are well versed in a variety of training tools; from food to collars to remote collars. We know that not all dogs do well with every tool and we will help you decide what tool is best for your dog as well as what tools you’re comfortable with using. At the end of the day, whatever tool you’re comfortable in using will be the one you’re most consistent in using and that’s what’s most important to us.
It is never too late to start teaching your dog new habits. It will take more time and effort than teaching a new puppy but you will love the outcome.

In order to know how long it will take to train your dog, we will need to do a free consultation. During your consultation, we will get to understand what you are looking to gain from the training as well as evaluate your dog to see what we will need to do to get him where you would like him to be. At that point, we will be able to give you a timeline for his training.

We do not have a one size fits all approach to training. Each dog owner team that has a free evaluation will have a customized program designed to fit your specific needs. While the cost of training is a wide range depending on a myriad of factors and personalization to your and your dog’s needs, training programs start at $250.

Additional questions? We’d love to help.
