Jolene has had great results from this training program with John at the Dog Wizard in Frankfort. Jolene is a shepherd mix and her natural breed instincts coupled with a 10 acre property surrounded by neighboring horse paddocks made keeping her within her boundaries challenging. She is now enjoying her freedom off-leash !! We highly recommend this training program. It has benefitted our household tremendously !

John was so great with our dog. He was patient and kind, and the two week board and train truly turned our dogs behavior around. We had frequent updates and the transition to teaching us the tools and resources for home were fabulous.

I just completed 5 weeks with Trainer John Ballard. Each class was amazing and a build on the previous class. I'm extremely pleased with the results and the improvement in my 3 1/2 year old lab's behavior. Starting after the first week, friends and co-workers noticed an improvement in her behavior and obedience. John is amazing. I would definitely recommend John and The Dog Wizard in Frankfort. Taking this course was a great decision. Included with the classes are lifetime support classes. A great added bonus that I'm looking forward to utilizing to reinforce and fine tune my skills.

8 weeks ago my family rescued Mojave from a shelter. Mojave is a 2 1/2 year old German Shepherd that was found as a stray and lived in the shelter for 10 months, before we rescued him. We knew he was labeled anxious but we also knew we had patience and love. What we didn’t know was the shelters way of handling anxiety was to give him high doses of trazadone. As this information wasn’t relayed to us till after he went through horrible withdrawals, we were faced with a beautiful boy who not only was trying to decompress from shelter life but battling withdrawals. He was wild on a leash and was torn between wanting love or hiding under a chair. Upon doing research, I was directed to call Dog Wizard and let John work with him. I am happy to say this was the smartest decision for our beautiful boy and my family. Mojave graduated today and I can’t help but to reflect on evaluation day and each session leading up to today. We left on day one able to confidently walk our boy, on the leash with zero pulling. I remember session two with patience and complete understanding of our dog’s behavior, John taught us how to meet his needs with confidence and patience. Our once stressed boy, confidently conquered each session. The environment was stress free and John’s knowledge and professionalism was well above my expectations. His methods and techniques certainly speak for themselves, as the results have produced a well mannered puppy, fresh out of a shelter, in a relatively short time. My family is forever grateful. Great conversation last week with Jonathan about my Rottweiler, Jean-Luc. Jonathan has an excellent understanding regarding my boy's behavior and laid out a comprehensive, customized plan for the board and train.

We couldn’t be happier with our experience with John Ballard! Our dog, Maddie, stayed with him for a 7-day board-and-train program, and the results have been amazing. John worked with her on both separation anxiety and socialization, and the improvement has been night and day. Before training, Maddie struggled with barking, pulling on the leash, and some anxious behaviors when left alone. After her time with John, she is calmer, more confident, and so much easier to handle on walks. John clearly has a deep understanding of dogs and knows how to address a wide range of issues—from chewing and jumping to housebreaking and more. We especially appreciated how John kept us updated throughout the week and gave us practical guidance to continue reinforcing Maddie’s progress at home. It’s clear he truly cares about both the dogs and their owners. If you’re looking for help with problem behaviors or just want to set your dog up for success, we highly recommend John Ballard’s training services. Maddie is living proof that his methods work!

We are so incredibly thankful for the amazing job John Ballard did in working with us on our girl Bonnie! She is our first large breed dog (lab), and at a few months old, we knew we were going to need help with how energetic she is. We initially signed up for the foundation training, but still dealt with her digging holes in the yard, jumping on countertops, chasing our much smaller than her shih tzu, so towards the end of her training, we decided to upgrade to the e collar training. We are sooo glad we did!!! We saw improvement in her behavior almost immediately. Now, she no longer digs, and rarely jumps up to the counter. John was extremely professional and always willing to address any concerns we had with Bonnie! Thank you, Dog Wizard and John for the outstanding service and support! - Josh and Lori Amyx

I had such a wonderful time in the foundations class with my toy poodle, Wally. The trainers we worked with are Andrea and Sydney, and they are just incredible! They are very patient and knowledgeable. They know each dog and their personalities. Wally was the only small dog in the class, but even so, the trainers always made it a point to mention things I might have to do differently (if needed) and included us. We were in a group of 6, and everyone had their own space, which was very important for Wally, as he is nervous/reactive to new and particularly big dogs. He took to the class better than I could have hoped. By the end, he was relaxed on a cot in a room of other dogs and people. The environment, clear instructions, and one-on-one time we had with trainers was fantastic. There were 6 people/dogs in our group and 2 trainers, so they were really able to help everyone individually for each exercise. I feel like I have the tools to succeed with Wally now! As a first time dog owner, it has been a huge learning experience. I wish I had come to the dog wizard sooner. Additionally, I am so excited to embark in the lifetime training support! We have already had a lesson as part of the lifetime support to help us work on Wally’s reactivity to other dogs on walks and barking. He has definitely gotten better through the class, but we still needed some help. It was tremendously helpful. They came to my house for the lesson and even brought a dog to help with the training! Absolutely call up the Frankfort Dog Wizard!

Frequently Asked Questions

The Dog Wizard Lexington offers a free evaluation. This enables our trainers to talk with you, in depth, learn about your dog, go over your training goals, and find a program that works for you. Give us a call and we will help you set one up.
The Dog Wizard trainers are well versed in a variety of training tools; from food to collars to remote collars. We know that not all dogs do well with every tool and we will help you decide what tool is best for your dog as well as what tools you’re comfortable with using. At the end of the day, whatever tool you’re comfortable in using will be the one you’re most consistent in using and that’s what’s most important to us.
It is never too late to start teaching your dog new habits. It will take more time and effort than teaching a new puppy but you will love the outcome.

In order to know how long it will take to train your dog, we will need to do a free consultation. During your consultation, we will get to understand what you are looking to gain from the training as well as evaluate your dog to see what we will need to do to get him where you would like him to be. At that point, we will be able to give you a timeline for his training.

We do not have a one size fits all approach to training. Each dog owner team that has a free evaluation will have a customized program designed to fit your specific needs. While the cost of training is a wide range depending on a myriad of factors and personalization to your and your dog’s needs, training programs start at $250.

Think of it like school, but for dogs. You drop your dog off in the morning, they spend the day working with one of our certified trainers, and you pick them up in the evening. No overnight stays, no kennels. We run two tracks depending on where your dog is starting from. Day Train-6 covers the foundations over three weeks, while Day Train-15 goes deeper into off-leash work over five weeks. Both finish with a handoff session so you know exactly what your dog learned and how to keep the lessons going at home.

The main difference is your dog comes home every night. Board and train is an intensive residential program where your dog stays with us for its duration. Day training gives you the same professional, daily structure without the long separation. Some owners prefer that. Their dog gets real work done during the day, sleeps at home at night, and the whole family stays connected to the process.

It really depends on the dog and the owner. Private lessons are session-based where you schedule time, we work together, you go home and practice. Day training is a daily program, so your dog is getting consistent repetition with a trainer five days a week rather than once or twice. Dogs that need more momentum, or owners with busy schedules who can’t always be present for sessions, tend to do really well with day training.

Your dog spends the day with us rather than alone at home. It’s structured time and far from just dogs running loose in a yard. Our trainers supervise everything, manage the group dynamics, and make sure each dog has a good day. It’s a solid option for dogs that need company and activity while you’re at work, but it’s not a training program. If your dog has behavior issues, those need a dedicated program — daycare won’t fix them.

Our trainers do. That’s probably the biggest difference between boarding here and leaving your dog at a standard kennel. The people feeding your dog, taking them out, and spending time with them actually understand dog behavior. It’s more than just supervision. It’s informed care. Your dog isn’t going to be stressed out in a loud facility with people who don’t know how to read them.
