When Should Puppy Training Start?

A puppy’s most impressionable time is when it’s young. Our puppy obedience classes are ideal for pups that are 8 weeks to 5 months old. By getting the puppy started within this age range, you can often curb some of the negative behaviors through corrective actions and let the puppy know what behaviors are acceptable through positive reinforcement.

Puppies at this age can start learning basic obedience commands. The Dog Wizard works with owners to teach these in our puppy training sessions.

They learn:

  • Sit
  • Place
  • Come
  • Down
  • Leave it
  • Off

During the puppy classes, the dogs are on leashes so the pet parents have control. Once the puppy is comfortable on the leash, we start to work on loose-leash walking so your furry companion can enjoy outings with you throughout Central Kentucky and Western Kentucky. The puppy may also continue training through our advanced obedience training options, some of which focus on off-leash training. They can also go through private training, which can also be off-leash depending on the location.

What Else Do Puppies Learn During Puppy Classes?

The Dog Wizard’s puppy classes are group classes. This provides valuable socialization for the dogs in the class. They get to spend time with other dogs and humans, so they become more comfortable with being around others. This is a highly useful skill since it enables the dogs to go out into the community without being frightened.

Another benefit of using the group training programs through The Dog Wizard is that the puppies in the sessions learn how to obey commands even if there are distractions. This important skill can help you keep your dog safe if you’re out and about with it and need it to obey when there’s activity around you.

Can The Dog Wizard Help Correct Behavior Problems?

Many behavior issues that puppies have are due to a lack of self-confidence. Teaching the dog to be confident in its actions helps address these problems. The Dog Wizard Frankfort does this by showing the dog that performing desired behaviors will produce positive results. This may even help curb separation anxiety as well as calming mildly aggressive dogs.

Our professional trainers also have training methods owners can use to stop problem behaviors, including those that manifest in adult dogs. This includes using corrective measures, but it also involves redirecting the puppy’s attention. For example, a problem barker might just need an activity to focus on. Giving it another focus can stop it from exhibiting excessive barking.
